Cohn discusses Stokowski's tenure with the Philadelphia Orchestra including his introduction of youth concerts there; Stokowski's Bach transcriptions and Lucien Cailliet's contribution to them; Stokowski's love of chamber music including his request for a private performance of the Shostakovich Piano Quintet; his programming of contemporary music by Shostakovich, Cowell, Berg, Webern, Varèse, Josten, Riegger, and others; Stokowski's rehearsals of the orchestra; the rehearsals for Berg's opera Wozzeck and Mary Louise Curtis Bok's funding of the opera; and the Band of Gold, a brass orchestra formed by Stokowski, who transcribed the music for the group.
